Winterization Tips for Marinas

Winterization Tips for Marinas

October 16, 2015

As the warmer months come to an end and the biting cold of winter approaches, boats and marinas need to prepare for the coming harsh weather. As these effects increase Marina Liability, consider the following tips to properly winter-proof boats and marinas alike.

According to New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services, marine engines stored in cold regions require winterization procedures to eliminate internal water freezing that results in the expansion of metal parts within the engine. Although marinas typically flush out the engines with antifreeze, it must be drained before the spring season begins the following year to avoid illegal discharge directly into marina waters. Even if the boat isn’t stored in a constantly freezing location for the winter, the boat still needs to be maintained throughout the season.

Winterization Products- While both ethylene glycol and propylene glycol are effective for winter engine protection, the latter is less environmentally aversive. Experts recommend flushing the engine with antifreeze prior to the winter season and ensuring it is drained completely. Next, store the antifreeze properly, according to state regulations, to promote safety.

Be Aware of Rust- Rust can be just as destructive as freezing parts in the engine. During the off season, use an internal and external corrosion inhibitor to safeguard idle parts.

Fogging Oil- According to Palms Marina, fogging oil is an anti-corrosive that will protect the internal surfaces of the carburetor and the cylinders during the winter. This oil can also be sprayed into the holes where spark plugs were removed and on the cylinder walls. While this area is examined, any damaged or broken spark plugs can be replaced, as well.

Never Procrastinate on Repairs- Rather than wait to make necessary small repairs until the season starts back up, experts recommend completing them prior to Spring. As most wait until the warmer months to make repairs, repair shops are often swamped. In winter, there are less customers and repairs can potentially get done much quicker.
